SEO in 2026: What Still Works, What Doesn't

AI search, Core Web Vitals, E-E-A-T — what to prioritize and what to ignore in the current SEO landscape.

SEO in 2026 looks nothing like SEO in 2020. AI Overviews are eating organic CTR. Google's "Helpful Content" updates have nuked content farms. And a lot of agencies are still selling 2018 playbooks. Here's what actually moves rankings now.

What still works in 2026

Topical authority over keyword stuffing

Google has moved decisively to entity-based ranking. To rank for "best running shoes", you need to be the authority on running broadly — not just optimize one page with the phrase. That means hub-and-spoke content models, internal linking that reinforces topical clusters, and consistent publishing in your niche.

Real expertise (E-E-A-T)

First-hand experience now beats theoretical knowledge. Reviews with personal context ("we tested X for 6 weeks"), case studies with real numbers, named authors with credentials — all of these get prioritized over generic listicles. Anonymously-published thin content has effectively zero ranking ceiling now.

Programmatic SEO (done right)

Done right meaning: real data, real differentiation, real user value. Done wrong meaning: AI-generated 'X near me' pages with no actual data. Google can tell the difference now. The brands winning programmatic in 2026 (Zillow, Tripadvisor, even smaller players) have unique datasets, not just templates.

What's dead (stop doing these)

  • Pure exact-match keyword stuffing.
  • Mass-produced AI articles with no editing or expertise layer. Google now identifies these via stylometric signals.
  • PBN backlinks. Detection has improved dramatically — risk of manual action way outweighs ranking lift.
  • Tactical "schema spam" — adding FAQ schema to pages that don't actually answer questions.
  • Cramming all your content into one massive 8,000-word "pillar page". Better to have a hub with focused spoke pages.

The AI Overview problem (and opportunity)

Google's AI Overviews now appear on ~40% of informational queries. They suppress organic CTR for the queries they cover, sometimes by 30-50%. But there's nuance:

  • AI Overviews cite sources. If you're cited, your branded traffic and authority compound, even if the click happens less often.
  • Transactional queries ("buy", "near me", "review") still drive clicks. Optimize bottom-of-funnel hard.
  • Comparison content ("X vs Y", "best X for Y") still has high click intent.
  • Long-tail informational + structured answers get cited more in AI Overviews. Format for citation.
※ Note

New SEO KPI for 2026: not just rankings and traffic, but citations in AI search results. Track them with tools like AlsoAsked, Surfer, or Profound.

Technical SEO that still matters

  • Core Web Vitals — yes, still a ranking factor. LCP < 2.5s is the bar.
  • Mobile-first indexing. 70%+ of queries are mobile. Render your most important content mobile-first.
  • Internal linking. Single biggest underutilized lever in most accounts we audit.
  • XML sitemaps that match your canonical strategy.
  • Structured data — for the right things (Product, Article, Organization). Don't spam.

A realistic 90-day plan

  1. 01Days 1-14: Technical audit + fix Core Web Vitals + crawl issues.
  2. 02Days 15-30: Topic cluster mapping. Pick 3 hub topics. Outline 8-10 spoke articles per hub.
  3. 03Days 31-60: Publish weekly. Real expertise content, named authors, internal links.
  4. 04Days 61-90: Acquire links via digital PR + HARO + guest posts. Quality over quantity (5 great links > 50 mediocre).

SEO in 2026 rewards patience, expertise, and operational consistency — not tactics. If anything, the playing field has narrowed: brands willing to put in 12-18 months of real work absolutely dominate. The shortcut crowd has been shaken out.
